Common questions

The things people ask before booking. Anything else, just ask us.

Do I need any experience to start?
No. Introduction to Coffee is the ideal entry point and has no prerequisites. Within the certified tracks, Foundation courses assume no prior training, while Intermediate and Professional levels require the level below in the same track. Prerequisites are listed on every course page. You must be 18 or over, and courses are taught and assessed in English.
What does the price include?
Everything needed to sit the course and be certified - instructor and trainer fees, all materials, coffee, milk, use of the equipment during the course, and your SCA registration, enrolment and certification fees. All prices include UK VAT. Travel, accommodation and parking are not included.
How much do courses cost?
From £150 for Introduction to Coffee up to £1,650 for the six-day Q Grader programme. Foundation levels are typically £240 to £395, Intermediate £495 to £795, and three-day Professional tracks £720 to £1,100. Every course page shows its own fee.
How long is a course?
Introduction to Coffee runs four to six hours. Foundation courses are a single day of around seven hours, Intermediate levels run twelve to twenty-one hours including the exam, and Professional tracks run three days. The Q Grader programme is six days.
Where are the courses held?
Inside Heart & Graft Coffee Roastery, 21 North Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester, M8 8RE - a working specialty roastery, so you train on production equipment rather than in a classroom.
Can I cancel or move my booking?
Yes. Cancel more than 14 days before a one-day or two-day course, or more than 28 days before a three-day Professional track, and you get a full refund. Inside that window you can move to another date free of charge, twice, subject to availability, or take a 50% refund. You can also transfer your place to someone else at any time before the course at no charge. Separately, if you book as a consumer you have a statutory right to cancel within 14 days of booking, and you get whichever of the two is more favourable. The full detail is on our terms page.
Are the certificates recognised?
Yes. We are an SCA-authorised training provider and our certified courses award Specialty Coffee Association certification on successful assessment, recognised across the industry internationally. The Q Grader programme is assessed under the Coffee Value Assessment framework. We also offer a City & Guilds barista qualification for teams through our wholesale programme.
How many people are on a course?
Small groups. Most courses need a minimum of two to four learners to run and cap out at six to eight places, so you get hands-on time on the equipment. Each date's remaining places are shown live on the course's booking panel.
Do you train café and wholesale teams?
Yes. We run team training at your bar or in the roastery, including a ready-made Core Barista Skills session and the City & Guilds barista qualification. See our wholesale and team training page.
What should I wear and bring?
Closed-toe, flat, non-slip footwear - we cannot admit anyone in open shoes, because courses run in a working roastery around hot equipment. Tie back long hair and remove loose jewellery and dangling sleeves. Everything else is provided. Tell us at booking about any medical condition, disability, injury, allergy or access requirement, or if you are pregnant, so we can plan properly.

Find your pathway

Tell us where you are - total beginner, working barista, or aiming for Q - and we’ll map the right pathway through the school.
